As parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, we’re all searching for ways to connect that don’t involve another screen. We’re frequently asked how to introduce golf to young kids without committing to a tee time or endless trips to the driving range. And as a parent who has physically carried a child off the fairway mid-meltdown, I can confidently say — I understand the emotional and financial realities of golfing with kids. Golf doesn’t have to start on a pristine fairway with perfectly pressed polos. Some of the best early golf memories can happen at home — barefoot, giggling, and slightly chaotic.
Here are our go-to at-home golf games — the ones that actually get kids engaged, keep things lighthearted, and create memories worth repeating.
✅ THE GOOD (Tried, Tested & Kid-Approved)
1.) BucketGolf
If you want one game that works for multiple ages and multiple attention spans, this is it. BucketGolf turns your yard into a casual course using buckets as holes. Kids love the instant “I made it!” feeling, and adults love that it introduces basic golf concepts without pressure.
Why we love it
-
- Easy setup, zero intimidation
- Teaches aim, distance, and patience
- Encourages teamwork and friendly competition
Ace & Bogey tip: Let younger kids toss or roll the ball instead of swinging. Same joy, less frustration.

2.) Chippo
Chippo is perfect for kids who love games with structure and clear “wins.” Think cornhole, but golf-ified. Players chip balls onto a target mat with point zones, making it ideal for quick rounds that still feel skill-based.

Why we love it
-
- Short attention span friendly
- Builds confidence fast
- Easy to turn into a family tournament
Ace & Bogey vibe: Competitive enough for adults, accessible enough for kids — a sweet spot we always aim for.

3.) Nintendo Switch Sports
Yes, it’s technically a screen — but we’re calling this a gateway game, not a crutch. Switch Sports Golf game introduces rules, terminology, etiquette, and sequencing without overwhelming younger kids. It’s often the bridge between “I don’t get golf” and “Can we try this outside?”

Why it still makes the list
-
- Low barrier to entry
- Builds familiarity with the game
- Encourages turn-taking and patience
Ace & Bogey vibe: Switch Sports today, backyard tomorrow. Balance is the goal.

Nintendo Switch Console $319.99
Nintendo Switch Sports $54.99 (This is the game we play which includes other sports as well. My kids also enjoy the tennis game. There are golf focused only games out there - we just haven't tried them .... Yet!)
Nintendo Switch Accessories Bundle $44.99
Mario Golf - Super Rush : Nintendo Switch (We don't have this game but really want to buy it! If you have it , pls give us a review!)
4.) Putting Mat
Simple. Timeless. Surprisingly addictive. A putting mat in the hallway or family room quietly becomes part of daily life — the kind of thing kids wander over to without being asked. We once sent a 6 yr old home from a playdate at our house with $30 because the boys started betting Dad they could make it... again... and again... I'd recommend leaving out the gambling but you do you! :)
Why we love it
-
- Screen-free by default
- Reinforces focus and repetition
- Easy to incorporate into routines
Family tradition idea: “One putt before bed” turns into a ritual faster than you’d expect.

Pool Golf - 2 Different Games of Pool Golf oddly enough
Swimming pool golf
It sounds fun. It looks fun. It is… chaos. Between wet grips, lost balls, slippery surfaces, and kids arguing over whose shot “counted,” pool golf quickly becomes more stress than memory-making. For more skilled golfers. Not kids.
Billiards Golf
We wanted this to work. Truly. On paper, it sounds clever — golf skills, indoors, controlled environment. In reality? Getting the ball over the edge of the cup was near impossible. Green never flattened. It’s a fast track to broken rules, broken focus, and parents saying things they immediately regret. Disclosure: I may have bought a cheap version of this game. I have seen a pricier version that looked more promising, but I'm still getting over the trauma of the drama caused so I'm steering clear for now.

Our honest take: Save the pool for pool things. Save the pool table for later years.
Why These Games Matter More Than You Think
These aren’t just games. They’re entry points — small, meaningful ways kids start to associate golf with:
- Time together
- Laughter over perfection
- Tradition without pressure
That’s the heart of Ace & Bogey. Whether it’s a wooden toy golf cart on a shelf, a putting mat rolled out after dinner, or a backyard game that turns into a weekend tradition, these moments stack up. They become the stories kids remember long before they remember their first real score.
Because where golf is played matters less than who it’s played with.
